Combinant la pratique de la chine avec un bagage artistique et un savoir-faire artisanal mêlant différentes techniques autour du travail du bois, du métal et du plâtre, Nicolas Aulagnier fait évoluer ses créations à mi-chemin entre design fonctionnel et artisanat sculptural.

Issu d’une famille de brocanteurs, titulaire d’une formation en ébénisterie d’art et restauration de meubles anciens, poursuivie par un parcours aux Beaux-Arts, Nicolas Aulagnier est à la fois artiste/artisan, designer mobilier et brocanteur spécialisé en design du XXe. Il sélectionne avec soin les objets qu’il chine, principalement des meubles et des céramiques de collection, et s’attache à retracer pour chaque pièce son histoire, sa signature, sa qualité de fabrication. Il développe également une pratique qui mêle à la fois la brocante, le design et le travail d’artiste/artisan. Avec comme point de départ un objet chiné ou une inspiration venant d’un design passé, il s’intéresse à sa matérialité et vient en révéler une nouvelle dimension plus sculpturale démontrant au passage qu’artiste, artisan, designer, les termes n’ont pas d’importance.

Combining the practice of searching for antiques with an artistic background and a craft know-how mixing different techniques around the work of wood, metal and plaster, Nicolas Aulagnier designs his creations halfway between functional design and applied art.

 

Born into a family of antique dealers, Nicolas Aulagnier trained in art cabinet making and antique furniture restoration, followed by a course at the school of fine arts. He is an artist/craftsman, furniture designer and antique dealer specialised in 20th century design. He carefully selects the objects he searches for, mainly furniture and ceramics, and focuses on tracing the history, signature and quality of manufacture of each piece. He is also developing a practice that combines antiques, design and artist/craftsman work. With as a starting point an object that has been collected or an inspiration from a past design, he is interested in its materiality and reveals a new, more sculptural dimension, demonstrating that the terms artist, craftsman, designer, do not matter.
